I-XAZINE INJECTION
Composition
Each 100 ml contains:
Xylazine HCl ......... 2 gm
Description
Xylazine has sedative, analgesic and muscle-relaxing properties.
Indications
All cases where sedation is needed, e.g. during transport, partus, hoof treatment, small operations (e.g. de-horning), and as a pre-anaesthetic for larger operations (caesarean sections).
Dosage & Administration
Cattle (intramuscular):
• 0.25 ml/100 kg — sedation, small operations.
• 0.5 ml/100 kg — small operations (animals usually remain standing).
• 1 ml/100 kg — larger operations (animals lie down).
• 1.5 ml/100 kg — very extensive operations (fast a few hours before administration).
Horses: 4 ml/100 kg IV, or 10 ml/100 kg IM. For larger operations preferably combined with other preparations (e.g. IV 4 ml/100 kg with halothane/fluothane as intubation narcosis).
Sheep: 0.15 ml/10 kg IM.
Dogs: 0.15 ml/kg IM or IV. With ketamine: 0.1 ml/kg plus 6–10 mg ketamine/kg.
Cats: 0.15 ml/kg IM or SC. Same combination as dogs.
Contra-indications
Administration during gestation or to animals with lung and/or heart diseases.
Administration to animals with pyometra, because these animals are often hypersensitive to this preparation.
Side Effects
Decreased heart and respiratory rate.
Hyper-salivation and vomiting.
Withdrawal Times
Meat: 5 days.
Milk: 4 days.
Warning
During application, keep the animals as quiet as possible.
Alpha-adrenergic antagonists — yohimbine, idazoxan and tolazoline — can be used to shorten the sedative effect.
